Day 14 - 29 May
This will just be a quick post - to keep things moving. The morning found us in the town of Roth, ready for another modest breakfast of fruit juice, cereal, fruit, eggs, baked beans, hash browns, pastries, breads, jams, tea, and coffee. We then caught buses to the town of Nuremberg.
Most of us went on the included Nuremberg City Tour, while a few hardy souls (notably Robin and Peter Kane) took the alternative Nazi Trial Tour. Robin hoped his group were going to take part in a rally, was disappointed when he realised that there was no rally, but enjoyed the tour anyway.
Highlights of the tour for the rest of us are shown in the following photographs.
A cemetary snapped from the bus on our way in to Nuremberg - the cemeteries are really well maintained and tended with fresh flowers on many graves |
Some lovely old buildings, and water |
The Imperial Castle - not bad for a castle |
A tower at the Imperial Castle |
View from inside the Imperial Castle |
Lovely photo of Peter Moorhouse (getting quite a reputation as a lady's man) festooned with groupies |
Another view from inside the Imperial Castle |
Finally away from the Imperial Castle - checking out the market in the main square |
OMG - soon tired of the main square we found this modest little cafe |
One of two very conservative items shared by Joanne, Rhonda and me for morning tea |
The second item |
Now this is what I call a coffee machine! (not at the same coffee shop) |
Pavel, one of our waiters, wearing traditional Bavarian headdress during lunch back on the boat |
After lunch we were treated to an informative lecture on the "Main-Danube canal" which we were travelling on. Then it was time to go up on deck and check out a lock that we were passing through and a wall that marked the highest point of land on the Main-Danube canal.
Almost there |
This is it - the highest point. A raindrop falling to the left of this wall would end up going down the Danube to the Black Sea; a raindrop falling to the right of the wall would end up going down the Rhine to the North Sea |
Actually a photograph from a few days earlier - Lea and Robin being very 'proper' eating cake for afternoon tea |
At dinner that night - Lea eating (I swear this wasn't staged) |
Well, that's all for this post. Tomorrow we're visiting Weltenburg Abbey and the city of Regensburg. Should be good because the weather forecast is fine.
